*Arjuna’s Arrows and Algebra!*

🙏🙏

*Bhāskarāchārya* (1114 -1185 CE), has been called the greatest mathematician of medieval India. He was born in Karnataka, and is considered the progenitor of Differential Calculus - 500 years before Newton and Leibniz!

Bhāskarāchārya wrote at least four mathematical treatises in Sanskrit. One of them, titled *Leelavati*, contains many algebra-related teasers, which have become the subject of significant research by scholars. These teasers are in the form of *shlokas* which pose the problems. The shlokas need to be interpreted correctly to decipher the meaning in order to find the solution.

Take a look at the shloka displayed below.

The direct meaning of this shloka is a question formulated as follows:

During the battle between Arjuna and Karna in the Mahabharata, Arjuna released some arrows. Of the released arrows:
• Half were consumed in stopping the arrows coming from Karna
• 4 times the squareroot of the arrows were consumed to control the horses of Karna's chariot
• 6 were for gaining control over Shalya, the charioteer of Karna. (Shalya was the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva)
• 3 were used to take on the umbrella and flag of the chariot and the bow of Karna.
• Finally Karna was killed by a single arrow.

So how many arrows were released by Arjuna in the battle?

Basic algebra easily yields the answer to this question, if the equation is formulated correctly.
Let the total number of arrows be X. The statements above can be reduced to the algebraic form
** X = X/2 + 4√X + 6 + 3 + 1*
Solving the above, we get the value of X=100 for the total number of arrows shot by Arjuna.

However, the fun is not just in getting the algebra right. There is so much hidden information in this shloka. If we pause to think a little deeper about the hidden meanings:

• Even for an atirathi like Arjuna, it took as many as 50 arrows to stop the arrows of Karna - it tells us about the skills of Karna.
• That the horses needed 40 arrows to immobilize the chariot tells us about the kind of training given to the horses in the battle field.
• When even the horses needed 40 arrows, that Shalya the charioteer surrendered with just 6 tells us that he is favouring Arjuna.
• 3 arrows to take the chariot and the bow shows the helplessness of Karna.
• Once everything is in control the enemy should vanquished in just a single arrow.

So the rules and skills required to win such a battle operationally are:

 firstly, stop the enemy fire-power; second, immobilize the enemy by taking on his mobility- the horses and the driver; thirdly signal to him his helplessness by destroying the carriage, and finally eliminate the enemy himself.

If we analyze the same shloka on the *spiritual* side:
• To attain ultimate liberation, firstly one needs to control over his/her personal desires, this being a very difficult task, thus takes 50 arrows.
• Then take control over 5 senses and sensual pleasures indicated by the horses. The 40 arrows needed to do this indicate the difficulty of the task.
• Gaining control over 5 senses will lead one to the control over the consciousness (manas, thought, ego) indicated by the driver.
• If all the foregoing are done, achieving the ultimate liberation (moksha) should be relatively easy.

This is the greatness of our ancestors in sanatana dharma - Vidya integrated with Values. Just a single shloka includes so much of knowledge!🙏

Ps.  I got this message via WhatsApp from a group post, original source and credit's unknown.

I thought this message conveys to much that one needs to know about our heritage, past and lost wisdom and so on... these need to be taught in schools so that these kind of wonders can be appreciated and everyone can be proud of our past.

To ponder, Good & Evil!

After wife took 5 hours to finalise one dress.

The husband commented:
"Adam was very lucky because he and Eve used to wear only leaves. He need not have wasted too much of time."

Ultimate comment of wife :
"Who knows how many trees Adam had to climb and finally choose the leaves as per the wish of Eve. You are lucky u have to just sit in AC shop
😜😜😜

P.S.
Adam and Eve walked around naked.  It is only after eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge that they became aware of their nakedness.  Human race should be eternally grateful to the devil for making eve and in turn Adam eat that fruit. All our. knowledge and scientific pursuit came out as a result of it.  Otherwise humans would have remained dumb like animals.

All praise and glory to devil,  the father of knowledge and wisdom.

My take from the book, “Attitude is everything” by John Keller.

I have recently completed reading the book “Attitude is everything” by John Keller.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING
CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE. . .
CHANGE YOUR LIFE . . .

This book is a quick and short read (128 pages). And boy! the lessons given here are so invaluable. The book is written in simple English that it is readable across every age and somehow, I felt that this book is even suitable for teens to achieve success from early years itself.

“You are not what you think you are, but what you think – You Are” –
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

contents of the book

The basic idea of the book is that it tells you to always have a positive outlook in every aspect of one’s life, be it the way you walk, the words you speak, and every action that one performs should be in a positive manner so that the “positivity” becomes integral to one’s subconscious mind. Here are some interesting things the book tells….

  • Success is a state of mind.
  • Your success in life begins and ends with your attitude.
  • You are a human magnet, we become what we think!
  • Behave what you want to be for the transition to happen effectively.
  • You have control over the pictures that occupy your mind, However, when you don’t consciously decide which pictures to play, your mind will look into the archives and keep replaying the old movies that is there in your mental library.
  • Visualize your success. Be clear about the things and goals you want to achieve.
  • Never underestimate your power to change yourself.
  • Success = Think - Speak – Act
  • You must first clearly see a thing before you can do it.  Visualization is key!
  • Whenever does someone asks you How are you?
  • STOP COMPLAINING
  • Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm.
  • The greatest mistake a person can make is too afraid of making one
  • You can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.
  • Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to drawback.
  • Committed people are going to hang in and prevail – no matter what.
  • Watch what you say, as that will become you and yours.
  • Use positive self-talk as often as possible so that the spoken words get into your subconscious mind to become what you spoke.
  • How you respond to “How are you?”, defines your approach to your dreams and desires and more so if you can succeed.
  • Complainers lack perspective, they tend to blow their problem way out of proportion. Optimistic people have a sense of what is truly important in life.
  • Associate with positive people, achievers, performers, visionaries, etc, as their attitude and wisdom will inspire you to excel and achieve greatness.
  • Evaluate friendship, from time to time. Those who occupy your time have a significant impact on your priceless procession, “your mind”. Do not abandon them but reduce your interaction if all you gain from the relationship is toxicity.
  • You are stronger than your fears…   and you can overcome them.
  • Confront your fears… and you’re on the way to developing your potential and leading the exciting, fulfilling life you deserve.     It’s a decision you’ll never regret!
  • You can’t ignore negative thoughts altogether. Instead, you can try indulging in more positive thoughts. The positive thoughts should dominate your negative thoughts.
This book was bought by my wife and she too procrastinates quite a bit and she then prescribed this book for me to read and help me to introspect and overcome my procrastination for the family to be happy and set an example.

It's more than just a book. The author has explained using multiple examples instead of giving some deep theories, and this makes it quite easy to comprehend. This book was a very welcomed change. I would recommend everyone to buy and read this book… I intend to use this book as a refresher whenever I would need some perspective…

Inspiration read...

"എനിക്ക് ഏതു പണിയും ഒരു ലഹരിയാണ് ;

ആ ശക്തിയെ ഉണർത്തിയാൽ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ഊർജസ്വലമാകും;

ചലനമില്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥയാണ് അപകടകരം;

Translated in English:
-------------------------------------------

Do not hesitate, always move time ......
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
"Swamiji, I'm tired of life. It's enough to die; isn't it better to stop singing when your voice is good ....?"

Arriving at the ashram, the young man told the Mahatma ...

The monk listened to the calls rising from the whirlpool of his mental anguish .........

"Son, let me tell you something that happened here in connection with the ashram ...."

That Mahatma started saying ....
At the monastery first a carpenter came to work; He cursed himself for the job he had been given and left very early, dissatisfied with what he had done ....

Then someone else came to work. He only measured and cut the work that needed to be done without much silence and left on time ...

After that, a third person came and did the job beautifully, very enthusiastically and effortlessly, without even paying attention to time and food, and happily stood up and asked, "Is there anything else?" When asked the reason for his enthusiasm, he said ..

“Any work for me is an intoxication;

Money is not important, work is charm ....... "

Look, here we are learning a lesson ...

That is, excitement is a powerful intoxicant that lies dormant in everyone ...

When that power is awakened, every moment of life becomes energetic;
It's not just one thing, it's all about life .....

Everything is heartfelt novelty for those who love life. They are able to infuse immense energy into everything they engage in, radiate positive waves all around, and invigorate life and death ........

It reminds me of the devilish state of hell when the first worker lives with a curse, the human condition of the earth when the second does only swadharma, and the heavenly state of heaven when the third does zealous life deeds ......

We must look at life with enthusiasm; Don't be depressed, we should always move from one activity to another ......

Immobility is dangerous;

That's where the enthusiasm is lost, and that's when life gets frustrating ...

Those who work hard will never fail, they will continue to succeed ......

Laziness is not the answer; Pay full attention to what you are doing and you are sure to succeed .....

Is this just random, I think not!

These pics here are just some random thoughts that have been running in my mind since a few days.

Everything begins with me and only me!

I have to work on myself first before things can become better and all changes begin with me making the first move.
